The Short Answer

Tricare does not cover IV ketamine infusions for mental health. But if Tricare approves you for TMS, Mind Spa provides six ketamine infusions at no cost through our Tricare Preferred Program. Same clinic, same course of care, zero ketamine bill.

If you searched "does Tricare cover ketamine therapy," you have probably already hit a wall of vague answers. Here is the straight version, written for veterans, military retirees, and their families in Colorado. It covers what Tricare actually pays for, why ketamine infusions fall outside that coverage, and the one path that gets eligible patients ketamine treatment without paying out of pocket.

Why Tricare Does Not Cover Ketamine Infusions

Ketamine has been FDA approved since 1970, but only as an anesthetic. Its use for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety is what medicine calls "off-label": a legal and common practice where a physician prescribes an approved drug for a condition outside its original approval. Roughly one in five prescriptions in the United States is off-label.

Tricare, the health care program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families, ties mental health coverage to FDA approval for the specific condition being treated. Because IV ketamine is not FDA approved for depression or PTSD, Tricare classifies it as unproven for those conditions and excludes it. This applies to every administration route: infusions, injections, and lozenges.

One exception exists. Spravato (esketamine), a nasal spray derived from ketamine, is FDA approved for treatment-resistant depression. Tricare covers it case by case with prior authorization, meaning your provider must document that standard antidepressants have failed before Tricare agrees to pay.

What Tricare Does Cover for Mental Health

The coverage picture is better than most people expect:

  • TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation). A noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of the brain associated with mood regulation. Tricare has covered outpatient TMS since 2016 for qualifying patients, typically those with depression who have not responded to antidepressant medication.
  • Spravato (esketamine). Covered with prior authorization for treatment-resistant depression.
  • Medication management. Psychiatric evaluation and ongoing prescription care.
  • Psychotherapy. Individual and family therapy with credentialed providers.

TMS is the key. It is the covered treatment that unlocks everything else in the program described below.

The Path to No-Cost Ketamine: The Tricare Preferred Program

Mind Spa built its Tricare Preferred Program around a simple premise: veterans and military families should not have to choose between the treatment their insurance covers and the treatment that could help them most. So we combined them.

Here is how it works:

  • You complete a free consultation and we verify your Tricare benefits.
  • Our team handles the TMS prior authorization with Tricare. This is our core competency, not an afterthought.
  • If Tricare approves your TMS course, you automatically qualify for six ketamine infusions at Mind Spa at no cost to you.
  • Your infusions are enhanced with vibroacoustic sound therapy and delivered under medical supervision at our Greenwood Village clinic.

Spouses and dependents covered by Tricare are eligible too. The invisible wounds of service rarely stop with the service member, and neither does this program.

Coverage by Plan

Plan IV Ketamine Covered? Tricare Preferred Program Eligible?
Tricare Prime No Yes, with TMS approval
Tricare Select No Yes, with TMS approval
Tricare Reserve Select No Yes, with TMS approval
Tricare for Life No Accepted at Mind Spa for TMS (Medicare primary, Tricare for Life secondary), but not eligible for the bundled program
ChampVA No Accepted at Mind Spa; program eligibility verified individually. Call us and we will check your benefits.

Tricare for Life note: Some clinics turn Tricare for Life patients away. Mind Spa does not. Because Tricare for Life works as a wraparound to Medicare, your TMS treatment is billed to Medicare first with Tricare for Life as secondary coverage. You still have a path to care here.

What Does Ketamine Therapy Cost in Denver?

Self-pay ketamine infusions in the Denver market commonly run several hundred dollars per infusion, and a full course typically involves six infusions. That puts many families in the position of paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for a treatment their insurance will not touch.

For eligible Tricare beneficiaries at Mind Spa, the ketamine cost is zero. The six infusions in the Tricare Preferred Program carry no charge to the patient. Your covered TMS course proceeds through your Tricare benefits like any other approved outpatient treatment, subject to your plan's normal cost shares.

If you are not Tricare eligible, call us anyway. We will walk you through current self-pay options and any coverage your commercial plan may offer.

Why Combine TMS and Ketamine at All?

TMS and ketamine work through different mechanisms. TMS delivers targeted magnetic stimulation to brain regions associated with mood regulation over a multi-week course. Ketamine at sub-anesthetic doses has been studied for rapid effects on mood and has been associated with increased synaptic plasticity, the brain's capacity to form new connections. Pairing a fast-acting intervention with a durable, structured one is the clinical logic behind our layered model, which can also include hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), medication management, and psychotherapy as needed.

Every treatment plan at Mind Spa is built by our clinical team around your history, your diagnosis, and your goals. Our providers bring over 97 years of combined clinical experience to that decision.
